Tips from the Inspector - Mechanical
UNGROUNDED ELECTRICAL WIRING
Probable causes and concerns:
Prior to 1958 the electrical code did not require the electrical
distribution systems within the home to be grounded. The major
concern with grounding occurs where electrical appliances could
come in contact with water (ie. Kitchen, bathroom, garage, outdoors,
etc.)
Remedy and Cost:
The installation of a ground fault circuit interrupter
(G.F.C.I.) on these outlets that may come in contact with moisture
will prevent serious shocks. The G.F.C.I. does not disconnect
power quite as quickly on a two wire (ungrounded) system but will
prevent serious injury. The G.F.C.I. will trip when there is a
diversion of current to ground. G.F.C.Is can be purchased
for $20.00 and cost about $20.00 to install.
